The club needs to raise about £7,000 a year just to keep going. We do this through sponsored rides, shopping centre collections and applying for grants. We have also been supported by local organisations – see the bottom of this page.
Peter Jackson Memorial Ride
On 20 August 2017, 16 members of Bury Tandem Club for Blind and Partially Sighted People will be riding 80 miles from Tottington to Southport and back, to raise much needed funds for the club.
Who was Peter Jackson?
Peter was a fell runner who joined the tandem club in 1989, riding every Sunday. He was a draughtsman who used his engineering skills to help build the triplet, the club’s tandem trailers and more. He was hugely dedicated to the club. Sadly, Peter died in 1998, aged only 57.
Please help us reach our target of £1000
If you would like to donate, or raise funds for the club, you can do so at BT Mydonate.
We are very keen to hear from businesses that are interested in sponsorship opportunities.
Club tops – With your name on our club tops, your business will be seen from Southport to Hebden Bridge and Burnley to Delamere Forest. Each Sunday, up to 10 tandems travelling in a group, make an eye catching and memorable sight. It’s a great opportunity for you to highlight your corporate social responsibility.
Email Ben Colman to discuss how you can support the club.
Why do we need to raise so much each year?
We pay for the tandems to be cleaned and maintained to a very high standard, every time they are used. This reduces the wear and tear but parts still need replacing. We also have a programme of improvements to the tandems – for example, we have recently improved the gearing on all the tandems and fitted V-brakes, which offer better braking.
Other costs include reimbursing taxi fares for visually impaired riders, if public transport isn’t practical, insurance, heating costs for the workshop (to dry out the tandems and keep them in tip-top condition), stationery and general running costs.
We do ask club members to buy the club kit and to pay for Riderbike cyclist insurance.
The tandem club survives through fundraising by its members and through very generous donations by local groups and businesses. We would like to thank the following who have supported us recently:
